Passage: John 2:13-22

March 3, 2024, marked the Third Sunday of Lent at Pender UMC, where Pastor Bruce Johnson unveiled the depths of "The Shape of Wisdom." With a sermon rooted in the powerful Scriptures of Exodus 20:1-17, 1 Corinthians 1:18-25, and John 2:13-22, attendees were invited on a journey through faith, understanding, and divine insight. This special Sunday also celebrated the first of the month, bringing the congregation together for a deeply moving Holy Communion service.

Under the skilled direction of Brian Stevenson, Pender UMC Director of Handbells and Ensembles, the Joy Ringers treated the congregation to their rendition of “Prelude on Thaxted,” arranged by Michael Helman.

Dedicated to Alanna Teragawa, this piece wove a tapestry of sound with handbells and handchimes, creating an ethereal atmosphere that progressed from a mesmerizing opening to an elegant waltz.

The performance was a testament to the ringers' mastery, navigating dynamic shifts and technical complexities to present a truly majestic musical epic.

Techniques included Echo, Let Vibrate and Singing Bell.

Patrick King, Director of Music Ministries, led the sanctuary choir in an uplifting performance of "We Fall Down" by Chris Tomlin, arranged by Philip Keveren. This soulful anthem filled the church with a spirit of worship and reverence, as voices united to create a moment of beauty and reflection.

Accompanied by the talented Heidi Jacobs on piano, the congregation sang renditions of cherished hymns including "Christ is Made the Sure Foundation," "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me," and "Ask Me What Great Thing I Know." Each hymn was a pillar of the day's worship, resonating with themes of foundation, refuge, and profound questioning, all aimed at deepening the faith and understanding of those gathered.
