Richard Edward Busby “Dick”, born Silsbee, Texas October 2, 1933.

Surviving is his wife of 60 years Jessie Miller Alexander Busby; his two sons, Richard Edward Busby, Jr. (Kim) and Russell Alexander Busby; two grandchildren, Zachary and Megan.

Entered the University of Texas, Austin at 15, he received a BS in journalism 1952-53; editor-columnist THE DAILY TEXAN 1952-55; Reporter/critic THE GALVESTON NEWS,1955-56; US Naval Officer, specializing in Public Affairs, 1956-78. Pearl Harbor, Hawaii (1956-59); Rota, Spain, (1959-63) Washington, DC Pentagon (1963-66); US Naval Station, San Juan, Puerto Rico (1966-68;) civic: Sigma Delta Chi U of Tex. Chap. Pres. (1954-55) US Org. San Juan, P.R. Advisory Bd. Salvation Army, 1966-68. Naval League of US Military Liaison member. Navy Public Information Officer (1966-68); US Navy National Defense Medal 1966.

Responsible for handling Navy’s Public Information during several crises in the Caribbean; burning and sinking of a minesweeper in San Juan, Marine Corp humanitarian assistance in Haiti and Dominican Republic after devastation caused by Hurricane Inez in 1966; the aircraft carrier Essex going around just off P.R., three ship collisions; performed special public affairs assignment during recovery operations for an H-Bomb off Palomares, Spain 1966.

Author of a number of published stories & articles; represented Navy at annual Radio and TV News Conference. Accompanied The Under SEC on an orientation visit throughout Caribbean 1966. Daily press briefer for Chief of Naval Operations tenth Naval Dist. San Juan 1968.

Selected as an Outstanding Young Man of America 1968. Received Masters’ Degrees from both the Naval War College and George Washington University in 1969.

He served a year in Vietnam 1969-1970. Last duty stations were located in Washington DC.

Dick had a keen sense of humor and was often asked to MC at Naval farewell roasts. He was an active member of Pender United Methodist Church for many years teaching and attending classes.
