Pender Joy Ringers | “Capriccio” by Kevin McChesney

On Sunday, May 4, 2025, Pender UMC’s Joy Ringers, under the direction of Brian Stevenson, performed “Capriccio” by Kevin McChesney—a thrilling concert piece for handbells.
Defined as “an instrumental piece in free form,” Capriccio is written in 7/8 time, giving it a vibrant, driving rhythm. The piece opens with energetic staccato techniques, then transitions into a reflective 3/4 section using mallets on suspended bells, creating a beautiful contrast. Returning to the original tempo, the music builds with martellato, mart-lifts, and shakes, culminating in a dramatic and spirited finish that had every ringer on their toes!
This dynamic and expressive performance showcased the talent and teamwork of the Joy Ringers and brought excitement and inspiration to the worship service.
